Heat & Humidity Can Also Spell Hail
As we all know, the summer weather of Iowa can bring high heat and humidity. These typical weather traits can make life uncomfortable, to say the least. And, they can also be an indicator of unstable weather, bringing thunderstorms and hailstorms without much warning.
No matter its size pea-size to golf ball and larger hail can damage anything in its path including trees, rooftops and your vehicle. The following tips will help you during and after a hailstorm strikes.
If You Drive into a Hailstorm
- Stop driving and pull to a safe place like under an overpass, remembering to pull out of traffic and onto the shoulder.
- Position your car so the hail is hitting the front. Windshields are reinforced to withstand pelting objects like hail; side and back windows are not, making them much more susceptible to breakage.
- Stay inside your vehicle.
- Until the hailstorm passes, lie down with your back to the windows. If you have a blanket, cover yourself with it to prevent debris from hitting you.
If a Hailstorm Damages Your Vehicle
If your vehicle is in a hailstorm, you'll most likely need repair work to remove the dimples left by the hail. You do have options:
- Conventional method done at a body shop, or
- Paintless Dent Repair (PDR) a process using specially molded metal tools that massage the underside of a damaged panel until the dent is removed. This method will not disturb your vehicle's factory finish and generally can be completed within a day.
Before you pursue either of these repair methods, please take these important steps:
- Call your Gateway Insurance Services agent as soon as possible to report your claim.
- Discuss the damage to determine the best repair method and set up an inspection time.
Before you leave the shop:
- Ensure your vehicle is repaired to your satisfaction.
- Discuss any issues with the provider and check for any remaining dents before you take your vehicle home.
- Get a written guarantee and contact information from the shop before you leave.
